2017 Wednesday afternoons – Acrylics
From 12th April 2017 for 8 weeks, Wednesday afternoon classes at Pickhams in Wilmington. 2 til 4 pm. £12 per session. £40 if booking and paying for 4 in advance. Use the form below to register your interest – payment can be made by bacs.
Acrylics are very versatile and ideal as a first medium for beginner artists. I don’t recommend starting with a cheap box of small tubes- the pigments are usually not as they should be and they tend to be thin, with more binder than pigment, making it very difficult to master the different techniques. If you do have them, they can be used to supplement other acrylics. It is best to go for Daler Rowney system 3 or Winsor and Newton Galeria tubes or something of a similar price. A large tube or tub of titanium white is essential.
Brushes can be the cheap ones, a mix of sizes and textures but make sure you include some with mixed fibres that bounce back when you bend them- do NOT use sable brushes, they will get ruined.
Don’t worry to start with about buying any gesso or mixing mediums, you can use mine at the classes. If you do buy gesso, there is a choice of white, black or clear. I’d start off with white.
Cheap canvas boards are ideal for practice, also have some heavyweight watercolour paper, a hardback sketchbook with decent weight paper, stretched canvases. I don’t like the acrylic painting paper but bring it if you have some. Mixing palettes can be anything from a sheet of plastic to a ‘stay wet’ palette (there are cheaper options such as cooking parchment and a j-cloth in a plastic food container with a lid)
Any other questions before we start, please ask!
In August 2016 I ran a series of workshops at Pickhams (see Art in Arlington page)and will run more art classes in 2017.
Friday 14th August 2015- Getting Movement into your work– at the Cartlodge, Horam Manor Farm, Horam, 7-9pm. £10 per person.
We will cover various ways to get a sense of movement into your paintings. Use whatever medium you like, I favour acrylics as a mixed medium with pencil and pastel. Bring tracing paper, sketching paper and pencils plus whatever you would like to use for a final piece – acrylic on canvas board or stretched canvas works well. Subjects can be anything from a windy day to birds in flight or the human figure, bring a photo if you have a preference.
The fee is £10 per person, limited places – please book using the form below or call me
