Pastel progress

Here is a piece I painted in pastels for a demonstration to the Wannock Art Group last night. I was in a lot of pain from my back and dreaded standing at an easel for 2 hours but I figured it would be more painful to sit so stand I did – and it was fine. The image is actually a little ‘tight’ for my liking but it demonstrated the techniques well of using soft chalk pastel on smooth, black mountboard, adding detail with tinted charcoal and pastel pencil and using a smudge stick and battery rubber to get shape and shadow. It’s nearly finished but ideally I need to work more on the sky with it flat on the table so I can use the chalk dust rather than it all dropping down into the easel gutter!
